This booklet used graphic illustration and short-form text to tell an alternative version of the Beowulf myth, and was created using Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop. Through the use of illustrative storytelling and loose-form text, this booklet offers a counter-narrative to the epic story of Beowulf where the lauded titular character, loved by all and considered a savior, is not triumphant in his battle against the beast Grendel, and the salvation of the kingdom falls to the weaker, cast-aside Unferth. This alternative to the known story is a rumination on the archetypal “golden boy,” and a questioning of the role “unremarkable” people play in a society that acknowledges most loud, highly-rewarded people, and takes visual references from illuminated manuscripts, modernist illustration, and vintage collegiate graphics.
